The Monroe letters comment on business matters, including Monroe's efforts to rid himself of debt incurred when serving in France, the purchase of furnishings for the White House, and personal items, and the tragic Richmond, Va. theater fire in 1811. Monroe also mentions the imminient arrival of Lafayette, and Lafayette discusses his travel plans. The non-Monroe letters are written in French.
